Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm (1786–1859) Grimm were German scholars of language and culture who worked as librarians and professors. Their interest in older German traditions led them to collect oral tales, first published in 1812 as Children's and Household Tales.

They also began the German Dictionary and wrote studies of language and mythology. Over several editions they revised the tales, often toward a family audience.
